H.R. Nicholls Society calls for Craig Laundy to live up to government promises of IR reform.

The H.R. Nicholls Society today has called out the recently-appointed Minister for Small and Family Business, the Workplace and Deregulation, Craig Laundy MP for not living up to promises of IR reform.

In attempting to explain away the Turnbull Government's unconscionable decision to abandon its promised legislation to subject union mergers to a public interest test, the Minster said: 

"I reached out to the crossbench to see if we had support for the Ensuring Integrity Bill. Unfortunately, we did not get the numbers to secure passage of this important legislation."

“Distressingly, the Minister seems to think that merely having tried should be enough to earn him brownie points hoping IR issues will continue the status quo of all talk and not action,” said Greg Pulscher Executive Director of the H.R. Nicholls Society.

It may be that school sports carnivals award prizes merely for participation, but it is unlikely those who will suffer as a result of the CFMEU and MUA merger,( the businesses, miners, builders, manufacturers and consumers) will be quite as relaxed as the Minister. They expect more than just trying because these are real lives and livelihoods affected by the government’s inaction.

The decision to abandon this promised legislation without even putting it to a vote in the Senate is a complete betrayal by this government of its most loyal supporters.

Achieving reform is always difficult and for good reason, but it is downright impossible if you capitulate at the first hint of opposition. 

“Long lasting prosperity is not something won by quick easy battles. It is done with the long term vision and conviction to ensure everyone a fair go,” said Greg Pulscher.

While the government may have given up, the HRN Society will continue to advocate for reform that will empower employees and employers, eliminate outdated and overly-prescriptive work practices, and  ensure future generations have the same opportunities today’s generations were afforded.
